India’s second 5G spectrum auction — the telecom sector’s most-watched event — starts June 6, with most analysts expecting Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to focus on specific bands in markets where they face renewals, and limited appetite from Reliance Jio as it has enough 5G airwaves and no renewals for the next six years. ET's Kalyan Parbat looks at what is at stake and the likely bidding strategies of Airtel, Vi and Jio as they slug it out for nearly Rs 97,000 crore worth of spectrum to be put on sale.

LIKELY BIDDING STRATEGIES

Bharti Airtel
  • Likely to focus on renewing spectrum in 6 circles
  • Airtel X factors With no 600/700 MHz on sale, Airtel may do some selective buys in 800 MHz (MP,
  • Maharashtra) and 900 MHz (AP, Gujarat, Karnataka, TN, Rajasthan, Kerala, WB)
  • May even chase some 2,300 MHz spectrum
Vodafone Idea
  • May focus only on renewing spectrum in 2 circles
Reliance Jio
  • With no immediate need, bidding may be muted
  • Jio X factor: With no 600/700 MHz on offer, may boost 800 MHz holdings in select circles
